So Nextcloud+Onlyoffice can come quite close to G Drive. Although Onlyoffice lacks the synching capablities of G-drive and Zoho, it does allow using sync-clients with standards-based solutions to syn. Onlyoffice is webservices centric and has an added offline documenteditor. Libreoffice and Openoffice are device-centric solutions. With Onlyoffice I can edit sensitive docxs on Manjaro or ChromeOS boxes without breaking noncloud policies, and I can edit docxs in my gdrive/onedrive/webdav that are too complex to convert. I found that docx editing kept me locked into having to have MS-stuff, until I discovered Onlyoffice. (chromebooks and linux with GApps/G Suite and Zoho/Onlyoffice). Subsequently I went Cloud and replaced most apps with cloud-alternatives that sync user-data and config-data I switched to Linux years ago by replacing my win apps with multi-platform alternatives first (ie-> firefox, outlook->thunderbird, MS Office-> Openoffice later libreoffice).

WPS Office, Softmaker Office and Only Office all have a UI much more closely aligned to Microsoft's office interface If I am being truthful, the primary reason I don't use LO(or OO) is that I have to work in Microsoft Office at work and I find it difficult to transition back and forth. Honestly, the longer I use Linux as my full-time desktop, the less often I open my Windows vm.

I suppose I would if I ever found I needed something that could only be done that way.

I have never been tempted to use Microsoft Office in a vm. I also use a combination of Only Office, Libre Office and Microsoft Office Online when appropriate. My primary choice is Softmaker Office which I use most of the time. Some people prefer to avoid those products.įor me personally, I find that I need a mix of tools to get the job done. Open Source - Many of the viable office suites for Linux, while free, are actually commercial products.Since office suites are used a lot of different ways, you might not notice or care about certain features or tools but others might not have the same needs. Functionality - In terms of breadth of functionality, LO and OO have substantially more than most of the other Linux office suites. While OO has picked up the pieces in the last few years, LO has already become the dominant open source office suite. When Open Office began to lose direction, the LO fork was created and picked up the pieces. History - For a long-time, Open Office was the only real quality open source office suite. Why LO is the de-facto suite installed in ML, actually in any linux?
